CD117, also known as c-kit, is a transmembrane protein expressed on hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells, interstitial cells of Cajal, mammalian ductal epithelia, melanocytes, mast cells and basal cells of skin.
Moderate cytoplasmic and membraneous staining is seen in the basilar region of the gastric crypts. More superficial epithelium is negative. Mast cells are darkly stained.
Strong membraneous and cytoplasmic staining in a GIST.
CD117 is negative in the appendiceal epithelium, lymphoid cells and smooth muscle of the muscularis propria. Mast cells are darkly stained and interstitial cells of Cajal are moderately stained in a membraneous and cytoplasmic pattern.
