CD138, also known as Syndecan-1, is a membrane protein which is involved in regulating cell morphology and adhesion. CD138 is predominantly expressed on mature plasma cells and early pre B-cells, in plasma cell malignancies, but not in mature mesenchymal and neural tissues. Various types
of epithelial cells are CD138 positive.
Weak to moderate cytoplasmic staining for CD138 is demonstrated in the columnar epithelium of the appendix.
Diffuse strong membrane staining is seen in this plasmacytoma.
No expression of CD138 is seen in the neoplastic cells of this typical diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.
