CD38 protein is expressed on a wide range of cells with the highest expression levels typically seen in plasma cells. CD38 protein is found on immature cells of the B-cell and T-cell lineages, but is absent from most mature, resting peripheral lymphocytes.
Moderate to strong membraneous and cytoplasmic staining for CD38 is demonstrated in this plasmacytoma.
Moderate membraneous and cytoplasmic staining for CD38 is seen in the germinal center B-cells of this normal tonsil. Strong staining is seen among plasma cells, and a range of staining intensity is seen among other hematopoetic elements.
The neoplastic cells of this diffuse large B-cell lymphoma are negative for CD38, while scattered non-neoplastic hematopoetic cells are positive.
